Three Little Pigs - Front Door Theatre.

Image
Friday 6th March 2026 "Three Little Pigs" Front Door Theatres Derby Theatre We were invited to a sneak preview of Front Door Theatre Three Little Pigs. A quick paced, well written short story based on the popular children’s book. With only two performers, Adam Horvath and Ivan Stott, it takes a lot to keep adults as we as kids entertained for any length of time and these two certainly managed that! They bounce off each so well, with quick reactions and comedic timing. Both showed off their skills with various accents supported by Anita Gilbert, the favourite being the Scottish builder lady.  They both truly are showmen. This was accentuated with Daniel Ellis’ flamboyant directing, who also designed the set, which consisted of a miniature theatre with velvet curtains, cabochon lights, and shell foot lights, perfect for creating a stage for the incredibly made, detailed puppets, made by John Barber.  I enjoyed how the brick how was on a revolve to reveal the inside where the b...

Glitch - Derby Theatre.

Image
Thursday 5th March 2026 " Glitch " Derby Theatre This piece of theatre is based on true events. It exploits the conflicts, cuts through the noise and gets to the heart of the reality for these sub postmasters during the time where glitches were found in the Horizon system.  The curtains are open, tinsel is spread across the minimalist set. You are taken straight into the joyful vibe of running the post office shop, set in the 90s, before the issues started.  This versatile cast each captured their multiple roles splendidly. Joanne Howarth, who plays Pam Stubbs, is the only person who doesn’t appear as other characters. Pam is at the centre of this story, we first see her as a happy worker who quickly starts to struggle which the new system that has just been installed. Joanne really captures the anger and frustration of Pam as we see the story progress, the longer the issues go on, the more stressed she gets.  Laura Penneycard plays Nora, the naive post office shop assist...

Glorious - Derby Theatre.

Image
Tuesday 24th February 2026 "Glorious" Derby Theatre Walking into the auditorium you are greeted with opera singing and glorious projected onto red curtains. This story based on true events has witty writing by Peter Quilter complimented by comedically timed directing by Kirk Jameson. With a hidden meaning of do what you want to do and take every opportunity when it’s given. We follow Florence Foster Jenkins, and opera singer, that can’t sing, along her journey of many recitals and reality hits. The cast for this show was quite small in to comparison when I last saw Wendi Peters in panto. She has a wide range of vocals and facial expressions which truly made Florence believable. Her rapport with the other actors was perfect, this is definitely how feel Florence would have reacted. Caroline gruber who plays Maria has a strong Italian accent, that you can tell time has been spent perfecting, a complete contrast to the high class lady she plays later on, Mrs Verrinder Gedge. Matt...

The Signalman - Derby Theatre

Image
Tuesday 27th January 2026 "The Signalman" Derby Theatre ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5 Stars) As a fan of Charles Dickens, I was excited to see this gothic tale come to life. First impressions tabs closed, the suspense builds rapidly as the eerie piano music plays. The use of smoke and flashing lights as the trains go past starts the show and is used throughout, immediately leaving a chill in the air. Instantly, the set makes you feel as if you are right outside the signal box, with trees constantly moving, echoed by the constant sound of wind, the leaves on the ground and the smoke that rises to add to the atmosphere. Inside the signal box, it feels like a home from home for the Signal Man, with a fireplace, brick walls, books, a crucifix, and even a working clock, which he references as each train goes by. And of course, the main attraction the train track leading into the tunnel, which is cleverly enhanced with projection to add those spooky spirits. Not to spoil the fun but the stage crew’s ...

The first thing you see is the famous Chitty car, styled in beautiful old-fashioned detail and placed in a petrol station setting. Before a single note is played or a word is spoken, the production has already pulled you into its world making it the perfect choice as my first show of the year to review. From the very first note of the overture to the final bow, this production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was a celebration of everything theatre should be: magical, joyful, emotional, funny and full of heart. It was a show that didn’t just entertain it completely pulled the audience into its world and refused to let go until the very end. The story follows inventor Caractacus Potts, his two children and his father, Grandpa Potts. When Caractacus rescues an old racing car from being ...
